Mission and Service of United Church of Canada: The work of The United Church of Canada across the country and around the world is funded by the Mission and Service (M&S) Fund. Members and supporters of the United Church know that it takes money to put their faith into action. In the M&S Fund they combine their gifts so that the work of the church can be done effectively.
Working with Global partners, the M&S fund in areas such as education, health, water, sustainable agriculture, human rights and community development. In Canada, it helps out community ministries, training, housing, food, counselling, outreach programs for youth through the Vision Fund, and lends support to congregations all over Canada. www.united-church.ca/files/funding/msfund/at-a-glance.pdf Mercy Ships: As part of a Sunday school project a few years ago, our youth made Christmas ornaments at Christmas and homemade hot-cross buns at Easter to raise funds, while also learning about Mercy Ships.
What was of special interest to these young people was that Mercy ships was the brainchild of a Christian group of young people. While on an outreach trip they became stranded by disaster and realized that the only mode of transportation to the area was by sea. One of those teens followed through with the idea and Mercy Ships was born. Mercy ships are floating hospital ships that have been transformed from cruise ships. These hospital ships and land-based teams provide primary medical care, relief aid and community support to the most impoverished people on earth, free of charge. When disasters strike, these ships are often among the first to arrive to the scene, offering much needed medical services. Aboard, the crew and staff are volunteers and your donations help them to run this very important charity service. There are heartwarming stories of success on their website, and donations are always welcome. www.mercyships.ca |
St. Columba House: Saint Columba House is a community ministry of The United Church of Canada situated in Point Saint Charles.
Saint Columba House strives to help residents have a voice in the future development of this vibrant neighbourhood, as well as within the wider society. Their many services are critical in this struggling Montreal neighbourhood, and your support is always most welcome: http://www.saintcolumbahouse.org Youth Upliftment: Our Sunday School has been collecting returnable cans, raking leaves, crafting and baking for this important charity for over a year now.
Devoted to helping get children in Dominican Republic off the streets and into schools, Youth Upliftment is the brainchild of a local West Island teen who made friends with some of these children while on vacation. She has pursued her dream of helping them with a great deal of success. Her website is also full of stories and hope, and you can help out by donating your returnable cans and bottles to the church. Simply drop them off in our "large" cardboard box on the church stage, or leave them at the church office. Every penny counts for these young people who are looking for ways to simply survive. www.youthupliftment.ca The Leprosy Mission Canada Stamps Contribution: This organization is very pleased that we are collecting stamps for them. The stamps are repackaged into 25 lb bags which they sell to dealers for $190 per bag.
In 2012, they were able to raise almost $15,000. An amount of $350 provides the cure for leprosy and additional care when necessary. You can help, by collecting used stamps (please cut a quarter to half inch paper border around the stamp) and dropping them off at our church offices. www.leprosy.ca Suitcases for Africa: This very worthwhile cause originates from a former member of Beaurepaire United Church originally from Kenya, and is continually welcoming donations (and suitcases!) to help build schools, dig wells and provide children with a hopeful future, in remotest regions of Kenya.
The Valois United Church Women's group invited a guest speaker to introduce their cause at last year's annual luncheon, and heard about the monumental accomplishments of a small group of local people, and their many fascinating stories of success so far. They are able to accomplish so much with so little. Please visit their website to find out more: http://www.suitcasesforafrica.com |
